size of fipple Name: - 2008/10/23(Thu) 21:09:36 No.96      It quotes.
Hi, I enjoy reading your website ... I have been making ocarinas for some years, but there are still some challenges which I don't understand - so maybe you have some anwers for me?! I use the 4 plus 2 finger hole system and round shaped body. My problem is, that the highest note (on a C it would be the high E) often squiecks and doesn't give a clear sound. You talk about the fipple alot in that context. Could you explain to me what the problem might be? The size of the fipple I make is a little bit wider than long and very clear and clean. What other factors impact the sound production of the higher notes?
Thanks so much for your reply to which I am already looking foreward!

The principle for making ocarina is easy.
Sound comes out well because it is efficient.
A good sound does not come out because efficiency is bad.
It is setting up on what breath difficult one being performed.
That's right.
On what level you perform grows into a big problem.
Although this should just become a hint ...

Thank you for all this information. My only regret is that i just graduated highschool and could have made these in pottery class for free, 4 hours a day, 5 days aweek my seinor year ^^ I cant wait to make my own still though. I like how i could make one for a specific song, witch i imagine will lead me to a certain sound i can feel. But i have a couple questions. 1) where could i buy your book for more info. and 2) would Fimo clay, witch i could fire in my kicthen, work well in makeing ocrianas, at least while i get started?

I am glad to have the help that my site settles your ocarina for.
You will be to know difficulty made with ocarina little by little.
But it has even pleasure made with ocarina.

It is my answer for your question.

The book of my ocarina has already become the abolished version.
But I think that only the information that there is in my site is enough.

Even if you use any kind of clay, you can make ocarina.
It is very interesting that tones are different by clay to use.
Of course the tone changes by how to make.

I do not have English well.
It is worry whether it reaches you.

after seeing your site I decided to try and make an ocarina. It was interesting to try and also tiring the first time. But I found a problem. I seem to lose volume as more holes are uncovered... I tried to adjust the sound hole in size and also the angle of the edge and noticed there is some change. But could you give me any advice to maximize the volume for higher notes?
Also I would like to compliment your work and your website. I found it very informative... especially the pictures gave me much insight to some problems I encountered.

How to fire without a kiln?? Name:Michael - 2007/02/11(Sun) 04:28:29 No.83      It quotes.
Dear Mr Ogawa

Thank you for sharing the Ocarina making skill. I want to start making Ocarina although I have never held a real one in my hand. I have found few good sources about how to make an Ocarina and did a whistle test (no finger hole). It was quite funny to make sound out of soft clay for the first time, since in your brain you just think its only soft mud but it makes sound.

I have done some pottery in high school so i know the basic making and drying process. However I do not have a kiln to fire the clay to 1200 degree. I read that you said not all Ocarina fire at high temperature. Is there any other way to fire it?? May be burn in a pile of charcoal (not just for the colour)? Also how long does it have to fire for?? I found out that clay usually warm up at low fire for an hour then an hour of medium and finally high (stone heat to red) for 2 hours. After that its wait to cool down.

I saw som where on the site you said you had a book publish in 1990, was that only published in japanese??

Kind regards

Michael Tue

When Ocarina which you began it and made gave a sound, you would be wrapped to be pleased.
As for me, I seem to see it.
As an ancient person made an earthenware vessel, you can burn Ocarina.
However, the method has much failure because temperature rises suddenly.
Because a sound is firm when Ocarina burns at 1,200 degrees, I think that lower than 1,000 degrees are good.
You can burn with charcoal, but tend to be damaged.
It is a natural story, but it is the method how it is good to use a specialized kiln most.
There is not carbonization in a purpose to color Ocarina.
Unfortunately a book of my ocarina is only Japanese. I think that this this||these site is enough. But look at a Japanese part.
I wish you make a good work.

Re: How to fire without a kiln... Name:Michael - 2007/02/11(Sun) 11:30:27 No.85      It quotes.

Mr Ogawa Thank you for the encouragement. Since I wrote the last message I have discovered my kiln. I think i might make a minigama like the design of Mr. Akira Yoshida. It should do the job nicely. Although it will be sometime till I work out how to sort out everything, also I don't want to think about the kiln too much instead should spend more time on ocarina making. Since I think even a dried out ocarina can play well right, may be not with the water in the mouth?

May I ask you what kind of clay do you use?? I think chinese uses the red one?

Also I saw on a video, this japanese ocarina maker burn his finished ocarina in hay and wood to gives a texture and he brush this stuff to it, and give the ocarina a reddish tone and yet you can still see the burnt marks, also surface become smoother then just hang dry. Can you tell me what is the thing he brush on to the Ocarina??

Also you said about below 1000 degrees does it has to be above at least about 750 degree as well??

Many Thanks and Good Heath

Kind regards

Michael Tue

Clay to use influences a sound.
Red clay includes iron content.
A sound seems to be firm.
I do not work on the appearance of Ocarina.
Because because Ocarina is a musical instrument not an art object.
This thing is the thing that is important when I make Ocarina.
Burning temperature affects a sound of Ocarina.
There is your need to devise your burning method to make it a favorite sound.
Burning temperature and quantity of heat storage of a work do not have, appearing.
Therefore it is useless.

Re: How to fire without a kiln... Name:Michael - 2007/02/11(Sun) 12:30:42 No.87      It quotes.

I see so temperature in a personal thing. Its depend of the purpose to choose a temperature.

I understand what you mean by ocarina is an instrument not an object. Since I am a bamboo flute player, I never understand why people make flute not only it isn't playable but also look really bad (although non player can't tell). How ever doesn't the surface treatment affect the touch of the instrument which is important?? Especially the lips area?? Can you achieved enough smoothness just by sanding after fire??

Re: How to fire without a kiln... Name:Michael - 2007/02/11(Sun) 22:53:21 No.88      It quotes.

Dear Mr Ogawa

I think i just get what you mean on the site about sharing half of the process and left half for experiment. If everyone do 100% of what you do that would become a 100% copy of your Ogawa ocarina but no more. If one experiment the other 50% of the process even with thing you and other masters have not thought of, open up the chance for a new and better kind of ocarina to be form and one that bare our own name, nurtured by masters instead of copy from masters.

Is that what you are thinking.

Anyway no more questions for now.

Thank you very much for your help, and nice talking to you.

Ha-ha the best method to get good Ocarina is to buy good Ocarina.
You should make it to realize it if there is a sound to image in you. But what question will not have need if a sound makes Ocarina as an appearing art object either.

I think that you have already noticed.

Pitch Name: - 2006/06/03(Sat) 00:12 No.75      It quotes.
I have been making ocarinas for more than a year now, and i look to your site constantly studying the timbre of the ocarinas you produce. I must admit your ocarinas are some of the best i have ever heard. i have two questions to ask you regarding the pitch of the instrument.
-Does the lenghth of the mouth peice determine pitch in any way?
-How much does an ocarina go sharp after it has been fired.
thank you again.

Re: Pitch Name: - 2006/06/03(Sat) 06:33 No.76      It quotes.

I'm sorry. I cannot understand the meaning of a question. However, an answer is tried by imagination. Is it the thing of the size of a sound hole? Sound hole is important and affects a tone, a pitch, etc. Is next it pich change by calcination? The rate of contraction changes at calcination temperature. However, 1000 degrees C hardly changes.

Thanks. Name: - 2006/02/28(Tue) 20:47 No.55      It quotes.
Dear Ogawa,
Thankyou for you infomation about ocarinas. An eight year old boy came to me during my pottery class last week and ask me to teach him how to make a whistle. I'm looking forward to making many.
We will have to play well together as a class. What fun.

Hi Jenny Honda
It will be impressed if ocarina which he made also from whom makes sound. The sound of ocarina sounds in people's mind directly. why it is -- ? -- your lovely students expect to experience the same joy. I want to see, when everybody's pleasant work is made.

Unusual ocarinas... Name: - 2006/02/09(Thu) 10:06 No.53      It quotes.
Are you interested in ocarinas tuned to different scales? (such as the Balinese or Indian musical scales?) There are also Peruvian ocarinas and "whistling pots" that have some interesting properties, such as multiple chambers for harmonizing.
I have also seen ones that use different sizes of holes covered in different combinations (to make more notes with fewer holes) but I'm not sure how they are tuned- lots of trial and error?

Your site was helpful, but do you know of any other sites that might help in the construction of non-standard ocarinas?

Please try. Name: - 2006/02/09(Thu) 20:29 No.54      It quotes.

Thank you for a comment. Though regrettable, I am not interested in Ocarina tuned up to other scales. However, it is possible to make Ocarina which you wish.
